I a very fortunate to meet Sheffield's nicest ladies in my classes! All classes are small, so that you get to know each other well and, in some cases, make life-long friends. The classes are light-hearted and enjoyable. We make everyone very welcome!
Due to the size of the classes, I do ask that new attendees contact me in advance, this is to avoid being disappointed if a space isn't available for you at the class - it's never happened yet and I don't want it to!
I have been inspired my Sheffield's women folk and am so grateful to have been able to spend some very special moments with my 'ladies' during our classes. I have met some beautiful, strong and courageous mum's to be and been delighted to meet the little babies that have listened to me teaching their mum's yoga when the babies join us for the post natal and baby yoga classes. Thank you Mums'.
Pregnancy yoga is now recognised that yoga is an ideal exercise for expectant mothers and has the backing of midwives and doctors as a recommended way to keep both fit and mobile.
After the birth of your baby, post natal yoga offers a gentle but effective way to get back in to shape both internally and externally.
Pregnancy Yoga – A different approach to preparing you for your birth
If you haven’t tried yoga before then doing so during your pregnancy will be a revolution! The use of yogic techniques can help women through their pregnancy with minimal discomfort, helping with the birth itself and beyond.
When mum’s-to-be practice yoga they generally find that they become healthier, in body, mind and outlook. The body becomes more flexible, which enables you to better adapt to various positions that you may adopt when in labour, as well as using the natural ligaments elasticity, which in turn can help to reduce pain in the labour.
Yoga helps to prepare mothers for their babies births – it encourages breath and body awareness, as we talk about the birth and labour, it helps to minimize birth concerns, teaches women to adapt to the wonderful changes that their bodies are going to go through and vitally, puts you in contact with other mums-to-be so you know that you are not alone.
In our pregnancy classes we focus on key areas such a breathing techniques, labour postures/asanas and pelvic floor exercises with a view to also helping you get back to being fighting fit after your birth! There are also relaxation and visualization techniques (yoga nidra) to help you to unwind, followed by important tea, biscuits and discussion about a wide variety of subjects all related to you and your baby.
The breath used in yoga is known as Ujayi (u-j-i-ee) and is a breath taken in to and out of the nose. The breath is drawn slowly in to the body so can help to clam you and also relax the body, stopping you from tensing up and giving you a tool to be able to actively manage your body’s reaction. The more you can relax the body the easier your birth will be. You can learn to breathe through the pain.
During the class we use different yoga asanas to strengthen core areas of the body you may use in labour. We use specific postures to strengthen the legs and backs, postures to help open the back and chest, strengthening the arms and postures to help relieve aches and pains. All postures work towards keeping the body in tip-top condition for the birth and beyond.
Pelvic Floor Exercises
We use the breath and focus on localized muscle toning to help the pelvic floor to return to its normal state after the birth. The exercises are calming and allow the mind to focus on specific body areas, promoting body awareness.
Relaxation and Visualization Techniques (yoga nidra)
These techniques help to promote complete relaxation of the body and mind. With the use of the breath as a focus point, a visualization (or yoga nidra) can allow the mind to focus away from the discomfort of the birth and help ensure maximum the body’s natural ability to relax avoiding tensions in the muscles that could build up during labour.
What Mum’s say…..
“I would like to thank you for all your help and support. The yoga really helped me to focus on the birth and I used lots of the things you have showed us especially using the ball and the breathing. The birth went really well and I managed to deliver with no pain relief as I hoped!”
"I think the breathing and relaxation techniques we did in class really helped - so thanks!"
All evening classes are held on a pre-booked basis, but I do offer limited flexibility regarding which class you attend on a weekly basis.
I want to say that the rehearsal classes have been great fun and that there are some fine dad's to be in Sheffield! For those who have attended....thank you very much.
What couples say....
"We found the rehersal class helpful and I am glad that I won't be relying just on my memory. The breathing and positions were most useful."
"We both really enjoyed the session on Sunday. It was great to hear from your friends about their experience. What I most appreciated about the session was the opportunity for my partner to find out about the different breathing techniques (we've been practising!) and the massage."
"We both feel a lot more confident about coping, I'm even starting to look forward to the event!"
A supportive partner is vital when you are giving birth to help you and your baby through the labour but sometimes its hard to know what to do as it may not be as instinctive as for the mum giving birth. We therefore offer bespoke classes to teach your birthing partner how best to support you through the birth of your child.
Labour support classes are conducted monthly so please call to find out when the next support session is due to take place. I am also happy to conduct these classes in the privacy of your own home.
If there are specific questions that your male birthing partner would rather ask 'man on man', please feel free to contact firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance. He'll respond to any questions and help in any way he can.
Our rehearsal classes are run approximately every six weeks and are £45.00 per couple including refreshments and cake.
Using my well woman training, I am able to offer fertility yoga to promote female well being and issues relating to conception. Please contact me directly to discuss yoga for fertility.
Please note that there are lists of useful resources on the class and contact details page.
